Following her Best Actress Oscar nominated performance in Carmen Jones, Dorothy Dandridge signed a three year movie contract making her the highest paid star in Hollywood. A Black woman getting paid more than any white person in the Hollywood community in the 1950’s? Yes, you know all hell broke out! Hollywood Insiders, under the leadership of Ronald Reagan, who was the President of the Screen Actors Guild, privately spoke of how, it was too soon for a black leading lady in Hollywood. Despite the outrage, there was nothing they could do because the ink on Dorothy’s 20th Century Fox contract was already dry. Dorothy Dandridge broke the color barrier at a time when blacks couldn’t even vote for the President of the United States. When blacks had no rights, but a black actress was the highest paid star in Hollywood.

Often referred to as “the black Marilyn Monroe.” Why not just Dorothy Dandridge? She’s a legend & sex symbol in her own right. There’s no need to say she was the black version of Marilyn Monroe.

Dorothy Dandridge broke down racial barriers and set the path for black actresses. She become the first black female to be nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Actress category for her role in Carmen Jones. Hollywood couldn’t appreciate Ms. Dandridge simply because she was black. She will always be a legend in my eyes. The epitome of grace, class, beauty, and sophistication.

"If I were white, I could capture the world." ~ Dorothy Jean Dandridge
