For the Love of Dorothy Dandridge

A rare find on Twitter today via @DandridgeDaily, audio of Dorothy Dandridge introducing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. circa 1963. You know I’m going to look into this further, right?

This Day & Aige: Request to 20th-Century Fox--Dorothy Dandridge

thisdayandaige:

I sent an inquiry to 20th-Century Fox Saturday I believe. I should have taken a screenshot of it. But I asked them who could I talk to about having a Dorothy Dandridge film collection (her 20th-Century films & other studios if possible) in honor of her & her upcoming 90th birthday. I also asked if…

Oh my gosh, YES!!! I’m all for it!!!

Dorothy Dandridge and actor Curd Jürgens (her co-star in 1958’s Tamango) enjoy hors d’oeuvres at a party thrown by producer Mike Todd (then-husband of Elizabeth Taylor) for his film “Around the World in Eighty Days” during the Cannes Film Festival in May 1957. Photo by Red Grandy, who has a great story about crashing the party to take this and other pictures.

You know what I have a problem with lightweight? Why do all these black celebrities focus so much on emulating Marilyn Monroe when Dorothy Dandridge was her closest black equal? Shit, Dorothy deserves some homage too. *eye roll*

As I’ve stated before, Dorothy and Marilyn were great friends. but the two had to hide their friendship due to the racism that existed at the time. This is the only nown photo of the two together.

Dorothy Dandridge broke down racial barriers and set the path for black actresses. She become the first black female to be nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Actress category for her role in Carmen Jones. Hollywood couldn’t appreciate Ms. Dandridge simply because she was black. She will always be a legend in my eyes. The epitome of grace, class, beauty, and sophistication.
