Not only was Dorothy a beautiful and talented actress, but she was also an extremely talented vocalist. Although she began as a member of the singing group, The Dandridge Sisters, along with her sister Vivian Dandridge and Etta Jones (yes, Etta Jones NOT Etta James), Dorothy gained more fame as a solo artist as she performed on the nightclub circuit oftentimes accompanied by Phil Moore on piano. In 1958, Dorothy Dandridge recorded a full length album that went unreleased until 1999. This album is the only known recordings with Dorothy Dandridge on the lead vocals.

*All songs were recorded in 1958 with the exception of 4 that were recorded in 1961.

Dorothy Dandridge broke down racial barriers and set the path for black actresses. She become the first black female to be nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Actress category for her role in Carmen Jones. Hollywood couldn’t appreciate Ms. Dandridge simply because she was black. She will always be a legend in my eyes. The epitome of grace, class, beauty, and sophistication.
